Ordered dither有序抖动

A fixed, regular threshold matrix is used to approximate a gradient, so a smooth ramp becomes visible steps and the image gains a patterned grain. The difference from film grain is that word “regular”: grain is random and changes every frame, dither is one unchanging grid.

When to use it

Use it for retro, pixel and print-flavoured visuals, and when a flat gradient needs a hand-made feel. Keep it off photographic content: it eats detail, and the regular grid produces moiré on thumbnails.

Parameters

Bayer 8×8 threshold matrix · pixel 2px · 1-bit quantize · drift 12px/s · per frame, no easing

Recipe

  1. Ordered dither → Bayer 8×8 threshold matrix · pixel 2px · 1-bit quantize · drift 12px/s · per frame, no easing

One sentence for your AI

Build an ordered-dither backdrop: compute a smooth gradient or noise field, then sample it in 2px cells and use the matching entry of a Bayer 8×8 matrix as the threshold to decide whether that cell takes the dark or light value (1-bit quantisation). The crux is that the thresholds come from a fixed table, not randomness, which is what makes the grain regular. Drift the whole field at about 12px/s, advancing per frame with no easing.
